pedals
unlike others, we
were able to use
small doses for
rich, heady grease,
as well as flat-out
dime every bit of it
for a beautiful and
smoking freight
train of rhythms
and leads. We
did unleash a few
obligatory VH riffs,
but to really give you
an idea of what we
dialed this in for, cue
up the incomparable
David Grissom’s
wicked instrumental
song “Squawk,”
which we were able
to conjure in spades.
That whole Grissom
album is a barnburner worth grabbing ASAP. The KY
Hot Brown was nice with a Strat straight into the 1964
Deluxe Reverb, and we only needed a bit of the gain for
smooth leads, but we think this pedal lives and breathes
to shine with humbuckers, no doubt about it. How
much do we dig it? We had an absolute throwdown with
it, and it truly set free a lot of notes in us that had been
waiting for the floodgates to open. For the money, this
is a slam dunk you just cannot beat. We now call it the
Hot Damn pedal. Quest forth….TQRiverhorse

TQR: You may consider sending one to our friend
Tom Bukovac, the first major influencer in
Nashville of the original Nobels ODR-1, for a
sniff test to see how he thinks it holds up.
That sounds good, I’ll definitely try to do that.
TQR: It’s been a pleasure catching up with you.
Thank you, I appreciate Tonequest and you all so much.
Thanks for keeping this going. TQScott Ulrichs
ANALOG PEDALS REVIEW
KY Hot Brown
We are fans of the pedals Jeff Bolin has been crafting,
and you have seen them here over the past couple of
years. The KY Hot Brown is Bolin’s take on getting the
famous Eddie Van Halen “brown sound” from a plug-
and-play pedal. Eddie used Marshalls, a tube Echoplex,
and a Variac, along with other mods, and often a
flanger/phaser. Our KY Hot Brown arrived on a Friday
afternoon, and we floored it through the 1959 tweed
GA-40 amp, along with an Electronic Orange Moon
Vibe and our vintage EP-2 Echoplex, plus a dark-back
goldtop loaded with Ron Ellis Signature humbuckers.
Sparks were flying, and what most impressed us were
the beautiful, lively harmonics gushing from the amp.
The pedal has a SERIOUS amount of gain on tap, and
